Dr. Steven D. McCarus, Center for Pelvic Health

     Dr. Steven McCarus, director of the Center for Pelvic Health at Florida Hospital Celebration Health, has received national attention for his development of the minimally invasive laparoscopic hysterectomy.
     Called the McCarus technique, it uses ultrasonic harmonic energy to perform hysterectomies via a tiny slit in the belly, without the need for large abdominal incisions.
     Previously, patients were in the hospital for a few days, and then had a recovery time of at least six weeks. Today a patient can go home the day after the surgery and recuperate in just two weeks, says Dr. McCarus.
     "While gall bladders are removed via laparoscopy nearly 90 percent of the time, only about 20 percent of hysterectomies use the minimally invasive technique," he says, adding that "hysterectomies are more complex because the anatomy and the ability to secure blood vessels are more challenging." That is why Dr. McCarus began to work on improving the technique, gathering data, simplifying the method to show a proven outcome. In 2006 he had refined the instrumentation and collected enough data to brand the technique as his own. He is now working with insurance companies and educating patients and physicians on the benefits of the minimally invasive technique.
     "My main mission is patient awareness," he says. He wants more people to know that this type of surgery is available, and for more physicians to become adept at performing it.
     Dr. McCarus travels nationally and internationally teaching other physicians how to perform this operation.
     Physicians from around the world now come to Central Florida to learn from him at the Nicholson Center for Surgical Advancement at Florida Hospital Celebration Health. The American Society for Women’s Health, which he founded, and Florida Hospital Celebration Health have a Gynecologic Pelvic Surgery Fellowship Program for pos-graduate residency physicians to be trained in his technique.
     Dr. McCarus’ Center for Pelvic Health also treats disorders such as endometriosis, uterine fibroids and incontinence, and offers infertility evaluations and hormone replacement therapy. Dr. McCarus, who received his medical degree from Marshall University School of Medicine, West Virginia, served his obstetrical and gynecological residency at the Greater Baltimore Medical Center.
     He spends his spare time enjoying Central Florida with his wife and two sons, boating, fishing, and participating in and watching sports.
